In this series, we are featuring Team8s who worked at 8x8, left to pursue other interests, and then returned to our team. We’re so excited to welcome back Daniel Schafer-Smith, Tier 1 Technical Support Engineer.

8x8: Dan, first off, welcome back to 8x8! Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do at 8x8?

Daniel Schafer-Smith (DS): I come from a technical background and education. Previously, I worked at 8x8 as a Customer Representative, educating and supporting customers on our products and services. I rejoined 8x8 as a Tier 1 Technical Support Engineer on the premium team in the UK, where I cover a lot of the things I used to do in my previous role, but with a much greater emphasis on resolving technical queries.

8x8: Did you always know you wanted to pursue a career in this field?

DS: Yes! I've always been interested in technology, and the enjoyment I got from previous customer-centric jobs made this role an ideal opportunity for me.

8x8: What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?

DS: One thing I’ve learned is that success will usually come after failure. It is just as important to reflect on your mistakes as much as your successes.

8x8: That’s very true, indeed. And what encouraged you to return to 8x8?

DS: For me, 8x8 has a very welcoming company culture that supports your personal growth and career goals. Everyone here is approachable and eager to collaborate or help with anything you might require assistance with.

8x8: What did you miss most about working at 8x8?

DS: I missed how supportive and welcoming everyone is. The encouragement in personal growth is something I have not experienced elsewhere. I also really appreciate the transparency about the company's future goals and vision.

8x8: What about when you’re not at work, how do you spend your time?

DS: When I'm not spending time with my family, I enjoy playing guitar and learning new things.

8x8: Interesting—what’s something that you’ve always wanted to try or learn?

DS: I've always wanted to delve further into computer programming. I find it fascinating how rapidly technology is evolving.

8x8: What’s something surprising that not many people know about you?

DS: I've got the cheekiest three-year old daughter ever!

8x8: What is the most enjoyable or most interesting thing that has happened to you this year?

DS: Easy: my return to 8x8!

8x8 is made up of a diverse bunch of more than 2,000 highly driven Team8s determined to shape how businesses communicate and work in today's rapidly changing world.
