What a Great Partner Program Delivers for Resellers

Why most programs fall short of their promise—and what we’re doing differently this year.link to this section

Almost every technology company’s go-to-market playbook includes the same version of a partner program. It has a portal, a PDF with tier levels, and probably a rebate percentage buried in a table. It’s also largely not maximised, because the vendor built it for its own convenience, not the reseller's growth.

Then there's the other kind. The kind that makes money for resellers.

With these programs, resellers win deals they wouldn't have won alone, with the vendor showing up like a teammate, not a supplier. It’s when the program is more than a commercial construct.

The difference between the two versions? Philosophy, structure, and execution.

What a Partner Program Should Deliverlink to this section

For a reseller, a partner program isn't just about discount structures or access to a logo library. At its best, it changes their commercial trajectory. Here's what that looks like in practice.

Revenue resiliencelink to this section

The best programs reward retention as much as acquisition. A reseller who keeps their customer base healthy and growing earns more than one who churns fast and starts over. Programs that build in recurring revenue incentives tied to maintaining and expanding an annual subscription base align vendor and reseller economics in a way that creates lasting value. That benefits margins and helps resellers build stronger customer relationships.

Pipeline they couldn't generate alonelink to this section

Resellers are often brilliant at closing, but pipeline generation is a different muscle. A meaningful program provides access to intent data, co-funded demand generation, and dedicated SDR resources. When a vendor puts an SDR into the sales motion alongside a reseller's team, both sides win. They find new logos, and the reseller scales the sales capacity without adding headcount.

A framework for growing into bigger dealslink to this section

Most resellers who struggle to perform on deal size aren't doing so because of their sales capability. They don't have access to the pre-sales, technical, or solution engineering resources required to compete on complex opportunities. The right program closes that gap with dedicated solutions engineers, technical masterclasses, and certifications that build genuine capability across the partner organization.

Confidence in the relationshiplink to this section

This is softer, but it matters enormously. Resellers need to know that the vendor is invested in their success, not quietly competing with them, not routing their customers to a direct sales team, and not changing the rules mid-year. Vendors build that trust through transparency, dedicated account management, and joint business planning. Without them, even the most generous rebate structure doesn't stand a chance of succeeding.

Why Partner Programs Succeed or Faillink to this section

What we see aligns with what the best channel leaders already know: Programs fail when vendors build them around internal reporting needs rather than the reseller's sales motion. That happens when a portal becomes a liability rather than a tool, or when "enablement" means a library of PDFs that nobody reads, or opaque rebate structures prevent partners from projecting their earnings.

I could name examples all day long, but basically, when the program expects resellers to engage on the vendor's terms - cadence, process, tooling - rather than meeting them where they are, then it’s harder to win.

Programs succeed when they do the opposite.

Simplicitylink to this section

If a reseller can't explain to their sales team how they earn in two sentences, the program is too complex. The incentive model needs to be transparent, predictable, and meaningful at every tier. Partners shouldn't need a finance degree to calculate the program’s value.

Enablement built around capability, not compliancelink to this section

Certifications should exist to make the reseller better at selling and delivering, not to tick a box for tier qualification. When certification means your team can genuinely demo Contact Center, design a CX solution, and handle a technical objection without calling anyone, it changes how you show up in front of customers. That's real capability building. And it's what separates partners who win from partners who transact.

Marketing that's ready to golink to this section

Most resellers don't have extensive marketing teams. The ones that do are stretched thin. Co-brandable collateral, campaign templates, and execution-ready assets aren't a nice-to-have. They determine whether a partner launches a campaign or waits. Add co-funded MDF and joint campaign planning, and you've given a reseller a go-to-market capability that they simply couldn't build on their own.

A program that scales with ambitionlink to this section

Tiered structures work when they create a clear line of sight between performance and reward. That requires specific thresholds, benefits, and support levels that increase as a partner grows, not vague promises. When a reseller can see exactly what Silver unlocks, what Gold adds, and what Platinum looks like, the tier structure becomes a growth roadmap rather than an arbitrary label.

Execution Is Where Programs Live or Dielink to this section

Here's the truth about partner programs: the design is the easy part. Execution is where it falls apart.

A program can have a beautiful slide deck, a compelling rebate model, and a thorough partner guide and still deliver almost nothing if the execution layer isn't in place. That means the channel account manager who shows up prepared, a Partner Success Plan that's a living document, not a one-time exercise in box-ticking, and a Quarterly Business Review that focuses on strategy conversation rather than reporting last quarter's numbers.

Execution also means the reseller isn't left alone to figure out how to use the program’s resources. A campaign in a box is only valuable if someone helps the partner deploy it. Intent data is only useful if there's a motion built around it. SDR support only produces results if it's properly integrated into the partner's pipeline process.

The vendors who get this right treat execution as a product in itself. They design the "how" with the same rigor as the "what." They build plays, not just benefits.

And critically, they measure the right things. Partner activity metrics matter, but partner outcome metrics matter more. Pipeline generated. Deals won. Revenue retained. Net new logos activated. These are the numbers that tell you whether the program is working. Both sides should review these numbers together every month.

One More Thing: Great Programs Work the Way Partners Dolink to this section

This is the part that most vendors miss entirely.

A partner program cannot succeed if it's built around how the vendor sells. Resellers have their own sales cycles, their own customer relationships, their own language for talking about technology. A program that ignores those realities andasks resellers to change their motion to fit the vendor's model will be tolerated at best, and abandoned at worst.

The best vendors design their programs around the reseller's world. They understand how resellers find customers, how they structure proposals, how their teams are built, how they manage renewals. And they build support for human and commercial elements that plug into that motion rather than replacing it.

That's the shift from a supplier relationship to a performance partnership. From selling to resellers, to winning with them.

What We're Building at 8x8link to this section

We've spent the past year thinking hard about all of this. The result is the 8x8 FY27 Global Direct Reseller Partner Program, a performance partnership built from the ground up around how our direct resellers actually operate.

The program rewards three things: retaining and strengthening your customer base, landing new logos, and expanding into strategic CX solutions. It does so through a tiered structure Authorised, Silver, Gold, and Platinum with clear revenue thresholds, transparent rebates, and no arbitrary caps on partner upside.

But the commercial model is only part of the story. What we're most proud of is the execution engine behind it.

Our High Touch Heroes work within partner sales motions to protect and grow existing customer bases. A dedicated SDR resource is available to Silver, Gold, and Platinum partners to drive new logo acquisition. Every tiered partner works with their Channel Account Manager on a Partner Success Plan, a joint document that aligns targets, marketing investment, and pipeline. Both teams review the plan together every quarter. And for partners who want to go deeper, the 8x8 Centre of Excellence, Innovation Council, and ThinkTank Council offer access to product roadmap influence that no other vendor in this space provides.

This is what we mean when we say we play on our partners' teams in their colors.
