How to Use Cisco IP Phone Video Conferencing

Did you know that you can video conference right from your desktop Cisco IP Phone?

Using your Cisco IP Phone for video conferencing makes it easy to join video meetings and video calls, without even needing your computer. Whether your computer is down, it’s updating the software, you’re running late and it’s still turning on – whatever the reason, not having your computer available does not mean you have to miss out on video conferences if you have your Cisco IP phone.

What Cisco IP Phones Support Video Conferencing?

Not all Cisco IP phones support video conferencing. It is only available on advanced models. The phone must have a color screen and a built-in camera to support this feature. The following models support video conferencing:

  • 8845
  • 8865
  • 8865NR

However, the person you’re calling must also have a video-enabled phone.

How to Make a Video Call

Making a video call with your Cisco IP phone is easy.

  1. Locate the camera – it is on the top of the display screen.
  2. Turn the ring on the outside of the camera clockwise – this opens the shutter
  3. Press self-view, and adjust the camera up or down to improve the perspective
  4. Make your call

It really is that easy!

How to Stop a Video Call

If during the video conference, you decide you want to stop sending video, all you have to do is close the camera shutter.

The camera shutter is controlled by the ring on the outside of the camera. Turn it counterclockwise to close it.

When you close the shutter, the call continues without interruption – the only change is that the person on the other end of the call will stop receiving video. You will still receive their video, and the audio will continue.

If the other person also closes their camera shutter, you will stop receiving their video.

At any point during the call, you can open or close the camera shutter to start and stop the video.

How to Toggle between Phone and Video Display

Your Cisco IP phone display contains a lot of information. If you need to see your phone’s desktop while on a video conference, Cisco IP video conference technology makes it easy to toggle back and forth.

All you do is press “Hide Video”, and the video blurs and moves to the background, so you can view your phone desktop.

To resume normal video viewing, press “Show Video”. You can repeat this throughout the video conference call.

Using Picture-in-Picture

When video conferencing, many callers like to be able to see their outgoing video at the same time as their incoming video. This helps to ensure that the other caller is getting a good view of your face, there is nothing embarrassing in the background of your video, etc.

To accomplish this, the caller needs to use the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) setting. When PiP is on, the incoming video displays on the full screen, with the outgoing video displayed on a smaller, inset screen.

The outgoing video display can be moved around the screen to whichever corner the caller prefers. It can be switched to full display of the outgoing call with the inset screen displaying the incoming video.

Using the PiP setting is easy and only takes a few clicks:

  1. Press “PiP” to activate
  2. Press “PiP” again to move the PiP display counter-clockwise around the screen. When the inset has made a full round, it automatically tuns off. Pressing “PiP” again will restart the feature.
  3. Press “Swap” to toggle between full-screen and PiP view
