Customize Your Voice Quality

How to Choose Your Preferred Codec for Each Extension

Take control of your voice quality by using the online 8×8 Account Manager to set your voice quality preferences extension by extension. By default, your extensions are set for compressed toll quality to conserve bandwidth. But you can select from the following options to meet your business needs:

  • Compressed Toll Quality (G.729) – Conserves Internet bandwidth and provides acceptable voice quality
  • Toll Quality (G.711) – Designed for toll quality without voice compression
  • HD Voice (G.722) – Designed for high fidelity voice and best sound quality

It is important to note that your codec selection is a preference, not an absolute setting. The final determination of which codec is used is determined by the receiving party. For example, if your extension codec is set to Compressed Toll Quality (G.729) and the receiving party only accepts calls at Toll Quality (G.711), the call will go through at Toll Quality (G.711).

However, there is still a great advantage to setting your codec preference. For example:

  • Keeping it at Compressed Toll Quality (G.729) ensures that your calls will save bandwidth whenever possible.
  • Setting it for Toll Quality (G.711) means you will always attempt to connect your calls with toll-quality voice
  • Setting it at HD Voice (G.722) means you can have lifelike conversations over your IP phone with other extensions that are set to HD Voice (G.722).
